Sergei Eisenstein (1898-1948)



Verstild beeld uit Ivan de Verschrikkelijke (1944 en 1958), waarover David A. Cook in zijn monumentale A History of Narrative Film zo terecht schrijft: a film of incomparable formal beauty.

En: If Eisenstein turned from agitprop to grand opera in his later years, it was perhaps because, after nearly two decades of bitter experience under the Stalin regime, he no longer believed in any cause beyond the nobility and necessity of art.
